Iran, Syria urge ‘fighting terrorism, organized crimes’

TEHRAN, Jun. 07 (MMA) – A high-ranking Iran-Syria Joint Security Workgroup has met in Tehran with both counties’ deputy-ministers of interior for security and political affairs attending.

Interior Ministry official website report said that the meeting had addressed fighting terrorism and extremism in Syria. A Syrian delegation from the country’s Ministry of the Interior Affairs and headed by Maj. Gen. Khalid Abdullah Kheder, also Deputy-Interior Minister, is in Tehran to participate in the workgroup. Iranian side was represented by Brig. Gen. Hossein Zulfaghari, where he welcomed Syrian delegation to the workgroup and highlighted the necessity of Iran-Syria cooperation in addressing terrorism, extremism, organized crime, and other security threats. The meeting also agreed that both sides take similar positions in major international developments.

Maj. Gen. Khalid Abdullah Kheder for his part, expressed gratitude for Tehran’s welcome of his delegation and Iran’s supports for Syrian government in fighting terrorism; “the Islamic Republic of Iran’s positions in supporting oppressed and downtrodden countries especially Palestine is laudable,” he added.

The meeting agreed on holding of expert sessions and training workshops. The workgroup ended the session with signing an agreement according to which both sides would closely cooperate in securing borders in addition to working together in facing diverse threats of terrorism and organized crime gangs.
